Will this free asset work on Quest? A pre-upload checklist
Written by VRC Free Watch · Last updated
A BOOTH item marked 「Quest対応」 does not mean it will simply show up on Quest once it is on your avatar. The difference between PC and Quest uploads, the shader restriction, performance ranks and texture compression, checked before you upload.
PC and Quest are two separate uploads
VRChat on Quest (and other Android devices) uses its own version of your avatar. Both can share one blueprint ID, but you switch Unity to the Android platform and upload a second time. An avatar with no Quest version appears to Quest players as a fallback.
Switching platforms needs Unity's Android Build Support module, which you can usually add in Unity Hub. The first switch re-imports every asset and takes a while, so many people keep a copy of the project just for the Quest build.
The biggest hurdle: shaders
Quest avatars may only use VRChat's own mobile shaders (the VRChat/Mobile family). Shaders common on PC, such as lilToon and Poiyomi, won't render as they do on PC, so the Quest version needs its own set of materials with the original textures assigned to mobile shaders.
That means emission, outlines, transparency and many other PC effects are lost or simplified. If a free outfit's appeal comes mostly from a special shader, expect it to look plainer on Quest.
Performance limits are much stricter
VRChat rates avatars Excellent, Good, Medium, Poor or Very Poor. Mobile limits are far below PC: for triangles, the mobile Poor limit is around 20,000, and many PC avatars exceed that with the body alone. Very Poor avatars on mobile are not shown to other players by default.
Besides triangles, watch skinned meshes, material count, PhysBones and texture memory. Every outfit or accessory pushes these up. VRChat adjusts the limits over time, so check the official Avatar Performance Ranking documentation for the current numbers.
What 「Quest対応」 actually means
On BOOTH, 「Quest対応」 usually means the creator prepared a lighter version using mobile shaders, or has confirmed it can be made into a Quest build. It does not promise that every combination will reach a visible rank: a Quest-ready outfit on a very high-poly avatar can still end up Very Poor.
The Quest tag on VRC Free Watch comes from the product page text and BOOTH's own badges; we have not tested each item. After downloading, check that the package really contains a Quest prefab or instructions.
Common ways to slim down
- Textures: lower the maximum size of Quest textures to 1024 or 2048 in the import settings and use ASTC compression to cut texture memory dramatically.
- Meshes: delete body parts hidden by clothing, or use the optimizer the creator recommends to merge meshes and remove unused bones at build time.
- Accessories: keep the one or two that define your look on Quest and leave the rest on PC.
- Physics: use fewer PhysBones on Quest, keeping only the most important chains for skirts and hair.
Checklist before uploading
- Unity is switched to Android.
- Every material uses a VRChat/Mobile shader.
- The SDK panel shows no red errors and the rank isn't Very Poor.
- Textures are compressed and sensibly sized.
- You've checked it on a real Quest, yours or a friend's.
- The PC and Quest versions have the same menu and toggles, so both audiences see the same thing.
